Another option for individuals that are have advanced Spanish language skills, simply want to practice conversation or simply want to discover the reality of another country is to serve as a volunteer. As a volunteer, you can greatly contribute to your speaking fluidity and learn the regional lexicon.

For those individuals more interested in Peruvian culture and learning about living conditions in this country, volunteering could prove to be the alternative option. FiorePeru offers a diversity of volunteer opportunities, some of which do not require advanced Spanish skills.

The following are a list of volunteer opportunities we offer:

As a volunteer, you will interact with children attending schools in Casma of the ages 3-5 years old. You will be expected to engage in their daily activity and helping foment their learning. Your responsibilities will include: participating in songs with the kids, showing the children how to paint, color, how to handle scissors, and how to trace.

As a volunteer will work in state schools (public schools) established for children with mental and physical impairments. Shifts are typically during the day but may be negotiable. Similar to the teacher's assistant volunteer opportunity, you too will be expected to engage in their daily activity and helping foment their learning. Your responsibilities will include: participating in songs with the kids, showing the children how to paint, color, how to handle scissors, and how to trace. Due to the lack of resources in public schools, you will also be asked to help manage by watching over the children's use of scarce resources.

As a volunteer, you will work in state sponsored elderly homes. Your responsibilities will include: assistance with feedings, helping maintain guest personal hygiene and in entertaining the guests by means of music, books, movies or a by simply providing thoughtful conversation. Your creativity will be greatly appreciated and this experience will prove rewarding.

The volunteers will manage the public while waiting to see a physician. Responsibilities include: weighing patients, taking temperatures, etc.

This volunteer opportunity is available both in Tortugas Beach and Casma. The volunteer will need to speak Spanish at level that will facilitate his/her first aid to the children and wives of fishermen. Volunteers will also be asked to have the skills to be able to teach children thorough the use of books, games, songs, etc.

Part of the volunteer experience is living the economic reality of other countries which is much more humble than that of developed countries. As most of the state run institutions are deficient in staff and resources, we encourage our volunteers bring materials but it certainly not required. If you are interested in bringing materials but are unsure of what to bring, please contact us and we can provide suggestions.

Workshops

For students/volunteer who wish to become more involved, FiorePeru offers 2 workshops a week for entertainment purposes. These workshops include: natural medicine, basic sewing, jewelry in beads/stones and leathering workshops (include making belts, wallets and change holders). The number or participants signed up for each workshop will determine which will be given. These workshops are free of any additional charge.

The cost for one month of volunteering is S/. 650.00 Additionally, FiorePeru will provide you or your educational institution with a certificate and/or letter verifying the dates of language study or volunteer service, included in the price.
